Why Sedation Dentistry Is WonderfulWhy Sedation Dentistry Is Wonderful

Sedation dentistry is wonderful because it allows you to have a significant amount of dental work completed, while you rest comfortably through your appointment.

If you feel anxious about going to the dentist, sedation dentistry is a well-tested, effective way to reduce discomfort and pain. It has the added benefit of allowing dentists to complete treatment in less time and with fewer appointments.

Types of Sedation Care

According to an Adult dental health Survey, almost 50% of people report feeling anxious or have extreme fear of the dentist. With that in mind, Dr. Frahm has created an atmosphere of tranquility in her Zen-inspired office. With aroma therapy, personal music players, plush blankets and neck pillows, we provide a gentle, calming experience to put you at ease as soon as you walk in the door. To further offset anxiety, we often suggest sedation dentistry to patients who experience dental stress and anxiety. Sedation dental care involves the use of medicine to reduce anxiety.

Dr. Frahm is an expert in two types of sedation dentistry. She always discusses your options with you before treatment begins. With each type of sedation care, you remain semi-awake and able to respond, but rest in a deep state of relaxation

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is an odorless gas that is used in combination with pure oxygen to induce a feeling of relaxation and well-being during treatment. It is the mildest form of sedation and creates a pleasant feeling of euphoria. Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for over 100 years. It is well-tested and effective. The gas wears off within minutes after treatment, allowing patients to return home on your own with no lasting effects.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation or OCS is a newer, extremely effective option of sedation dentistry. Dr. Frahm has undergone rigorous training to be certified with the Doctors for Oral Conscious Sedation. Referred to as “twilight” treatment, OCS puts you in a dozing state. You will feel relaxed and rest through treatment. With oral conscious sedation dentistry, about an hour before treatment, you’ll take anti-anxiety medicine to reduce your stress even before coming in. Many patients prefer OCS because it is a deeper form of sedation that prevents anxiety, makes the experience more comfortable and reduces your memory of the procedure.

While your treatment is performed, our care team monitors your blood pressure, oxygen intake and heart rate to make sure you are calm and well taken care of. Because the effects of oral conscious sedation last longer than nitrous oxide, someone will need to bring you to your appointment and drive you home later.

Your dental health and well-being are important to us. You’ll also be hearing from Dr. Frahm once you return home to ensure you are feeling comfortable and well.

If you have a fear of dental work, you are not alone. Dr. Frahm will carefully discuss your particular needs with you to determine which form of sedation care works best for you. As always, our holistic approach to dental care keeps your long-term wellness in mind. Contact Dr. Frahm today at 831-372-8011. Our office is conveniently located at 660 Camino Aguajito #201 in Monterey, CA 93940.

Portland Sees Alarming Increase in Car Crashes and Injuries in Recent YearsPortland Sees Alarming Increase in Car Crashes and Injuries in Recent Years

New data from the Portland Crash analysis and Reporting Unit reveals a troubling upward trend in motor vehicle crashes over the past year. Compared to the previous year, Portland saw an upsurge of 18.76% overall in crashes in 2021, including a 20% rise in fatal crashes and 22.67% more non-fatal injury crashes.

In raw numbers, Portland recorded 45,295 total crashes in 2021, including 552 deadly crashes and 23,729 crashes that resulted in non-fatal injuries. An additional 21,014 crashes resulted in property damage only. This translates to around 125 crashes per day on average in 2021.

More Crashes Leading to More Injuries and Fatalities

With the large increase in crashes, injuries and fatalities also rose significantly. 599 total people were killed in Portland traffic crashes in 2021, a rise of 18.15% over 2020. Total people injured jumped by over 28% to nearly 36,000 injured.

Drivers accounted for the majority of fatalities and injuries, but vulnerable road users like pedestrians and bicyclists also saw high casualty counts. 88 total pedestrians and 18 bicyclists were killed in crashes last year, with many more injured.

Errors Leading to Crashes

Driver errors were the top cause of most crashes in Portland last year. The most common mistakes included:

  • Not avoiding stopped or parked vehicles ahead
  • Failing to yield right-of-way
  • Driving too fast for the conditions
  • Inattention/distraction
  • Following too closely

For pedestrians, the top errors were failing to yield right-of-way and crossing between intersections rather than at crosswalks. Bicyclists most often did not to yield right-of-way or were riding inattentively.

Young Drivers at High Risk

The data shows young drivers between the ages of 15 and 20 were involved in a disproportionate share of fatal and injury crashes compared to their share of drivers. This age group was involved in over 18% of such crashes despite making up a far smaller portion of total drivers.

Call for Action

The worrying rise in crashes and injuries on Portland’s streets presents a major public safety issue. As the data makes clear, more must be done to improve driver awareness and skills, enhance traffic law enforcement, redesign dangerous roads, and protect vulnerable road users.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a motor vehicle crash, contact Beau Harlan, a personal injury lawyer in Portland, OR, at insert Law Firm. Adjusting to Orthodontic Treatment in Kirkcaldy: Mitigating Initial DiscomfortAdjusting to Orthodontic Treatment in Kirkcaldy: Mitigating Initial Discomfort

Navigating the Early Stages of Orthodontic treatment

Embarking on an orthodontic journey often marks a significant change, yet it’s not uncommon to experience some initial discomfort. This temporary phase can be managed effectively, ensuring a more comfortable progression towards a beautiful smile. Orthodontists in Kirkcaldy are committed to providing a comfortable commencement of your orthodontic treatment.

understanding Initial Sensations

Mild discomfort is typical after the fitting of braces or aligners, as your teeth begin their realignment process. This sensation is natural and usually lasts a few days as you adjust to the new orthodontic appliance.

Methods for Enhanced Comfort

Orthodontic Wax: If brackets or wires cause irritation, orthodontic wax can offer significant relief. Applying a small amount over problematic areas creates a protective barrier, reducing irritation.

Pain Relief Medication: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can ease soreness. It’s important to follow recommended dosages and consult a healthcare professional when needed.

Saltwater Rinses: Regularly rinsing with warm saltwater can provide oral relief and help decrease inflammation.

Dietary Adjustments: Eating softer foods after getting braces or aligners can help lessen discomfort. Hard or sticky foods should be avoided to prevent exacerbating any sensitivity.

Consulting Your Orthodontist: If you experience persistent or increasing discomfort, it’s important to speak with your orthodontist. They can provide adjustments and specific advice to improve your comfort.

Acclimatising: Over time, your mouth will become accustomed to the orthodontic devices, and discomfort will decrease. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene and adhering to your orthodontist’s advice are crucial during this period of adjustment.

Initial discomfort is a standard part of undergoing orthodontic treatments. With the appropriate strategies and expert guidance from your orthodontist, this early phase can be more manageable. This temporary discomfort paves the way for the long-term advantages of improved dental Health and aesthetic enhancements.

Complications of Untreated Nasal Polyps: Potential Risks and Long-Term EffectsComplications of Untreated Nasal Polyps: Potential Risks and Long-Term Effects

Understanding Nasal Polyps and Their Impact on Health

Nasal polyps are soft, noncancerous growths inside the nose and sinuses. They hang like drops or pears, partially obstructing the nasal airway.

Nasal polyps form because of constant irritation of the internal lining of the nose from allergies, asthma, and other chronic or long-lasting inflammatory diseases.

Nasal polyps can impact health by continuing the cycle of chronic inflammation.

Chronic inflammation causes nasal polyps. Nasal polyps obstruct the nasal airway and worsen the inflammation. Thus, visiting your health professional for diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis is important.

The Connection Between Nasal Polyps and Chronic Inflammatory Disease

It is not yet understood why some people develop nasal polyps while others don’t. There is evidence that people with different immune system responses develop polyps and people with different chemical markers in their nasal lining that produce mucus. Nasal polyps are most common in young adults and middle-aged adults.

Nasal polyps are associated with chronic nasal and sinus inflammation, aka chronic rhinosinusitis, lasting 12 weeks or more. Chronic rhinosinusitis can result from chronic inflammatory diseases such as recurring infections or allergies.

Potential complications can arise from the coexistence of nasal polyps and chronic inflammatory diseases. Nasal polyps can block airflow and normal drainage in the nasal cavity, negatively impacting recovery. Complications then occur if left untreated.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Nasal Polyps

Chronic sinusitis with nasal symptoms can feel like a cold. But a cold goes away after a few days. Here are common symptoms associated with nasal polyps:

  • Persistent stuffiness that causes difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Less sense of smell
  • Less sense of taste
  • Postnasal drip that causes a constant need to swallow
  • Runny nose
  • Snoring
  • Headache
  • Pain over the face and in upper teeth
  • Pressure over your forehead and face where the sinuses are
  • Itching around the eyes
  • Cough
  • Frequent nosebleeds

Why Seeking Healthcare Provider Expertise is Essential

With the symptoms and cascading complications from chronic inflammation, it is important to consult your healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment. They can diagnose based on your symptoms and medical history through their expertise. Or they can refer you to other healthcare providers that can give diagnostic tests. Here are diagnostic tools and techniques healthcare providers can use to confirm whether you have nasal polyps.

Nasoscope

Your healthcare provider can use a non-invasive technique by looking into your nasal cavity with a lighted instrument called a nasoscope or otoscope.

Nasal Endoscopy

Your healthcare provider can perform a nasal endoscopy if the nasal polyp is possibly deeper inside your sinuses. In this procedure, your healthcare provider will guide a thin, lightweight, and flexible tube with a light and camera on the end into your nasal passages.

CTI or MRI

Once polyps are confirmed in the nasal cavity, the healthcare provider must know their exact size and location. They will use a CT scan or MRI scan to do so. The scans will confirm if the polyps have deformed the bone area or rule out other types of growth, such as cancerous growth.

Allergy Tests

Aside from finding polyps, your healthcare provider must also determine the source of your chronic inflammation. They may perform allergy tests.

Allergy tests involve testing liquid variations of different allergens on the skin of your forearm or upper back. You may feel minimal pricking after the substances make contact with your skin. After 15 minutes, your healthcare provider will check for allergic reactions.

Blood Test

They may also order a blood test to check for low levels of Vitamin D associated with nasal polyps.

Potential Risks of Untreated Nasal Polyps

If left untreated, complications can arise and affect nasal function and breathing with long-term effects. Nasal polyps and chronic inflammation can Increase susceptibility to sinus infections and cause recurrent allergies. With obstructed nasal function, breathing is also affected, causing reduced sleep quality and fatigue.

Increased Susceptibility to Sinus Infections and Recurrent Allergies

Untreated nasal polyps can also worsen the symptoms of sinus infections and allergies. It can block nasal passages and prevent drainage of stagnant mucus. Prolonged inflammation can weaken the body’s immune response and cause complications such as:

  • Bacterial sinus infections of the tissues around the brain and spinal cord (meningitis)
  • Bacterial sinus infections of the sinus bones (osteitis)
  • Bacterial sinus infections of the tissues around the eye (orbital cellulitis)
  • Asthmatic flare-ups

The Importance of Timely Diagnosis and Treatment

Due to the possible complications of untreated nasal polyps, early detection and intervention is important. With timely diagnosis, symptoms can be managed and avoid complications. Below are the two treatment options for nasal polyps: medical treatment, such as nasal sprays, and surgical intervention.

Medications and Nasal Sprays in Managing Nasal Polyps

There are different medications to reduce polyp size and relieve symptoms of congestion.

  • Nasal Steroids
  • Oral Corticosteroids
  • Injectable corticosteroids
  • Dupilumab
  • Antihistamine and Antibiotics

Surgical Intervention: When is it Necessary?

An indication for surgical intervention is the persistence of symptoms, even with drug treatment. Most surgical procedures for nasal polyp removal are outpatient procedures.

General or local anesthesia is used for the surgery. General anesthesia makes the patient unconscious for the procedure, so they don’t feel any pain. Patients under local anesthesia may feel pressure with no discomfort.

Polypectomy requires a microdebride that cuts the polyps into small pieces as it moves back and forth. At the same time, its suction removes the debrided tissue.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery is used to remove larger polyps. The endoscope allows the healthcare provider to see inside your nose. Specialized instruments are used to remove the polyps.

Your Pregnancy Broken Down By Trimester and WeeksYour Pregnancy Broken Down By Trimester and Weeks

pregnancy is one of the most magical experiences a woman can go through. It’s a time of wonder, growth, and anticipation as you prepare to welcome a new life into the world. The journey of pregnancy is typically divided into Three trimesters, and within each of these trimester weeks, you’ll discover a world of changes, milestones, and excitement. In this heartfelt and relatable guide, we’ll take a deep dive into the trimesters, breaking them down week by week, so you can better understand and appreciate the pregnancy experience.

First Trimester (Weeks 1-12)

1. Week 1-4: The Humble Beginning

Your pregnancy journey begins with the miracle of conception. These initial weeks are like a silent overture to the grand symphony of motherhood. Your body is quietly preparing for the incredible journey ahead, even if you’re not aware of it yet.

2. Week 5-8: A Time of Rapid Growth

By the time you reach the fifth week, the tiny life inside you is making significant strides. Your baby’s heart begins to beat, and little limbs start forming. But don’t be surprised if you experience morning sickness and fatigue during this period. It’s all part of the process.

3. Week 9-12: Baby’s First Moves

As you enter the second month of pregnancy, your baby’s facial features become more defined. They even start making tiny, almost imperceptible movements, although you won’t feel them just yet. The first trimester concludes with your very first prenatal check-up, where you’ll get to hear that precious heartbeat.

Second Trimester (Weeks 13-27)

1. Week 13-16: The “Golden” Period

Welcome to the “golden” trimester, where the magic truly begins. By now, you might start showing a bit, and the relentless morning sickness often subsides. Around the sweet 16-week mark, you might feel those initial flutters of your baby’s movements – a moment of pure joy.

2. Week 17-20: Gender Reveal

Somewhere around week 20, you might have an ultrasound that reveals the gender of your baby. It’s an exciting moment that adds a layer of anticipation to your journey. Your baby is growing rapidly, and you’ll likely feel more energetic during this period, like you’re riding a gentle wave of pregnancy.

3. Week 21-27: Baby’s Senses Awaken

As you step into the third trimester, your baby’s senses begin to awaken. They can hear your voice now, and their tiny eyes start to open. You might notice those kicks and movements becoming stronger and more frequent. It’s like a secret dialogue between you and your little one.

Third Trimester (Weeks 28-40+)

1. Week 28-31: The Countdown Begins

The third trimester is when the countdown to your baby’s arrival truly begins. Your little one’s organs continue to mature, and you might experience Braxton Hicks contractions – a reminder that the big day is drawing near. It’s a time of preparation and anticipation.

2. Week 32-36: Preparing for the Big Day

As you approach your due date, there’s a flurry of activity. You’re getting the nursery ready, washing baby clothes, and attending prenatal classes. Your baby is packing on the pounds, getting ready for that first cry in the outside world. It’s a period filled with both excitement and a touch of nervousness.

3. Week 37-40+: The Home Stretch

You’ve made it to the home stretch! Your baby’s lungs are maturing, and they’re settling into the head-down position for birth. It’s a time of heightened anticipation as you await the arrival of your little one. Labor can happen anytime now, so keep your bags packed and your support system ready.

Final Thoughts

Pregnancy is a miraculous experience and life-altering that words can scarcely capture. It’s a time of immense change and personal growth, both physically and emotionally. By breaking down the trimesters into weekly milestones, we hope to offer you a more profound understanding of the incredible process your body and your baby go through together.

Coping with Rare Pregnancy ComplicationsCoping with Rare Pregnancy Complications

Pregnancy can be unpredictable sometimes marked by rare pregnancy complications that need special attention and care. Let’s look more into these conditions to help expectant mothers and their families understand and prepare for such eventualities.

Hyperemesis Gravidarum: Navigating Severe Nausea

Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is not just extreme morning sickness; it’s a severe condition that can significantly impact health and quality of life during pregnancy.

Symptoms and Impact

HG goes beyond common nausea and vomiting. Women with HG might experience severe and persistent vomiting, leading to dehydration, weight loss, and electrolyte imbalances. This can have a profound impact on daily life, making it challenging to maintain regular activities or even consume sufficient nutrition.

Treatment Strategies

The treatment for HG often involves a combination of approaches. Dietary modifications to include small, frequent meals and avoiding triggers can be helpful. Intravenous fluids and anti-nausea medications may be necessary in more severe cases, and in some instances, hospitalization is required to manage the symptoms effectively and ensure the safety of both the mother and the unborn child.

Placenta Accreta: Understanding the Complications

Placenta Accreta is a serious condition where the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall and can lead to complications during delivery.

Diagnosis and Risks

Diagnosis typically involves ultrasound imaging, with MRI used in some cases for a more detailed view. The condition can lead to significant bleeding during delivery, posing risks to the mother. It is more common in women with previous cesarean sections or other uterine surgeries.

Management Approaches

The management of Placenta Accreta often involves a multidisciplinary medical team. It might include a planned cesarean delivery, followed by a hysterectomy in severe cases to control bleeding. Prenatal care includes regular monitoring and planning for a safe delivery strategy.

Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy: Beyond Itching

Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP) is a liver disorder that occurs in pregnancy, leading to intense itching and increased risks for the baby.

Causes and Symptoms

ICP is thought to be caused by pregnancy hormones affecting liver function, leading to bile acids building up in the blood. This results in intense itching, often without a rash, and can be particularly severe at night.

Treatment and Monitoring

treatment for ICP includes medication to lower bile acid levels and alleviate itching. regular liver function tests and fetal monitoring are essential to manage this condition and reduce risks to the baby, including preterm birth and stillbirth.

Preeclampsia: A Silent Concern

Preeclampsia is a condition characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to other organs, typically the liver and kidneys.

Identifying and Managing Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia can develop silently with few symptoms, making regular blood pressure checks essential. Symptoms, when present, can include severe headaches, changes in vision, upper abdominal pain, and sudden weight gain. Managing preeclampsia involves careful monitoring of the mother’s blood pressure and the baby’s health, with medications to control blood pressure and, in some cases, early delivery to prevent severe complications.

Gestational Diabetes: Sugar and Pregnancy

Gestational diabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels become elevated during pregnancy and typically resolve after childbirth.

Screening and Lifestyle Adjustments

Screening for gestational diabetes is a routine part of prenatal care. Management typically involves monitoring blood sugar levels, dietary changes, regular physical activity, and in some cases, insulin Therapy. Keeping blood sugar levels under control is crucial to avoid complications for both the mother and the baby.

Amniotic Fluid Complications: Maintaining the Balance

Amniotic fluid complications, including too much (polyhydramnios) or too little (oligohydramnios) fluid, can pose risks to pregnancy.

Causes and Management

Polyhydramnios can be associated with gestational diabetes or fetal anomalies, while oligohydramnios might be linked to issues with the baby’s kidneys or premature rupture of membranes. Management involves regular monitoring through ultrasound to check the fluid levels and the baby’s development, with interventions as needed based on the severity of the condition.

Conclusion

Navigating rare pregnancy complications requires awareness, proactive management, and a strong partnership with healthcare providers. understanding conditions like Hyperemesis Gravidarum, Placenta Accreta, Intrahepatic Cholestasis, Preeclampsia, Gestational Diabetes, and amniotic fluid issues is vital for anticipating potential challenges and ensuring both maternal and fetal health.

Invisalign and its growing popularity among adults and teenagersInvisalign and its growing popularity among adults and teenagers

traditional braces , a brand name synonymous with ‘invisible aligners,’ has emerged at the forefront of orthodontic treatment, transforming smiles across the globe. As the world’s largest user of 3D printing technology, Invisalign has redefined the approach to teeth alignment, substituting the traditional wired braces with a Clear, nearly invisible, and removable alternative. The innovation does not stop at the aesthetic appeal, as these aligners offer a level of comfort and convenience unparalleled in the domain of orthodontics. It’s no wonder then that Invisalign has witnessed a surge in popularity among both adults and teenagers, becoming the preferred choice for those seeking to enhance their smiles without compromising on their lifestyle or appearance. This growth in popularity can be attributed to several factors, including increased awareness, accessibility, and the continual advancements in technology that Invisalign embodies. As we delve into the world of Invisalign, we will explore these factors in more detail, shedding light on the reasons behind the burgeoning popularity of this revolutionary orthodontic treatment.

Comparison between traditional braces and Invisalign – appearance, comfort, and maintenance

When comparing Enoch & Lamei Orthodontics in East Cobb, GAand Invisalign, the first noticeable difference is their appearance. traditional braces, composed of metal brackets connected by wires, are quite visible and can sometimes hinder the wearer’s confidence to smile openly. In contrast, Invisalign aligners are made of a clear, medical-grade thermoplastic material, making them virtually invisible. This discreet nature of Invisalign aligners contributes significantly to their popularity, especially among adults and teenagers who prefer a less noticeable orthodontic solution.

The technology behind Invisalign – how it works and the process of getting fitted for aligners

The technology behind Invisalign is a testament to the perfect blend of Dental science and 3D modeling. At the beginning of the treatment process, a digital scan or physical impression of the patient’s teeth is taken. This data is then transformed into a 3D model using proprietary software, ClinCheck® software, which maps out the step-by-step journey of the patient’s teeth from their current position to the final desired position. The result is a series of tailor-made aligners that apply the right amount of force at the right time to move the teeth into position. Each aligner is typically worn for 1-2 weeks before moving on to the next in the series, gradually shifting the teeth into the desired alignment. One of the main advantages of this technology is its predictability; orthodontists can see the projected outcome before the treatment begins, enabling them to plan the tooth movement more accurately and discuss the result with patients upfront.

Tips for maintaining proper oral hygiene while using Invisalign aligners

Maintaining proper oral hygiene is critical during orthodontic treatment, especially when using Invisalign aligners. It ensures not only the effectiveness of the treatment but also the overall health of your teeth and gums. Here are some tips to help maximize your oral hygiene routine while using Invisalign aligners:

  1. Regular Cleaning of Aligners: Always clean your aligners before putting them back in your mouth, especially after eating. Use a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to gently scrub all surfaces.
  2. Rinse After Eating: Before re-inserting your aligners, rinse your mouth to remove any food particles that might get trapped.
  3. Brush and Floss Regularly: Maintain your usual oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss once a day.
  4. Avoid Sugary and Acidic Drinks: These can cause plaque buildup and tooth decay. If you wish to drink these, remove your aligners first.
  5. Regular Dental Checkups: Regular visits to your dentist can help catch any potential issues early and keep your treatment on track.

Remember, a clean mouth leads to clean aligners, and ultimately, a healthier, happier smile.

If you’re considering starting your orthodontic journey with Invisalign, look no further than Invisalign. Known for their exceptional patient care and vast expertise in the field, this practice provides a comprehensive orthodontic experience that is tailored to your individual needs. Their team of specialists employs the latest technologies in orthodontics, ensuring that you receive the most effective treatment possible. Whether you’re an adult seeking to enhance your smile, or a parent looking to provide your child with the best orthodontic care.
